Russia: The Duma has ratified the treaties of accession to the Ukrainian oblasts | world news

Documents relating to the ratification were presented to the State Duma by the Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Russian Federation Sergei£awrow. Then the deputies passed the laws on entering the so-called Donetsk and Lugansk Republic People’s Republic, Zaporizhia and Kherson oblasts to the Russian Federation already in the first reading.

Earlier, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov admitted on Monday that the Russian authorities have not yet determined the shape of the borders in the Kherson and Zaporizhia oblasts and “they will be consulted with the inhabitants of these oblasts living near the border”.

On Friday, the President of Russia Vladimir Poutine announced the incorporation of the occupied territories of eastern Ukraine into Russia. This decision is the result of pseudo-referendums organized from September 23 to 27 in the oblasts of Donetsk, Luhansk, Kherson and Zaporijia. The vote was forced by the electoral commission and the Russian army.

Leaders of 27 countries and heads of EU institutions on Friday condemned further illegal annexation of Ukrainian territory and threatened to toughen sanctions against Russia. The joint statement was issued by the members of the European Council.

“We will never recognize the illegal referendums that Russia invented as a pretext for further violations of Ukraine’s sovereignty and territorial integrity, nor their falsified results. Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelensky, in his speech published over the weekend, expressed his gratitude for the condemnation of Russia’s pseudo-referendums on the international stage. The Ukrainian leader stressed that the pseudo-referendums were illegal and had nothing to do with the real situation on the front.

In a special way, Volodymyr Zelensky thanked UN Secretary-General Antonio Gutteres, who – as he said – stated bluntly that Russia violates the purposes and principles of the UN, the Charter of Nations united and that pseudo-referendums and attempts at annexation would not have the force of law.
