Sandra Drzymalska on ‘IO’ Oscar Nomination: It’s a Huge Hit

The simple nomination of “IO” for the Oscar for best international feature film is a huge success. We should be very happy about it – said actress Sandra Drzymalska on Tuesday, when asked about the emotions that accompanied the announcement of the finalists for the awards of the American Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences.

Nominations for the 95th Academy Awards were announced on the awards profile on YouTube on Tuesday. The names of the finalists were read by American actress Allison Williams and British actor Riz Ahmed. Jerzy Skolimowski’s “IO” was among the nominees in the Best International Feature Film category.

On the same day, at the Warsaw headquarters of the Polish Film Institute, the filmmakers met with journalists. Actress Sandra Drzymalska admitted that the news of the success of “IO” had not yet reached her. “Great emotions accompanied us until the last moment. When it turned out that there was a nomination, there was an explosion of great enthusiasm (…). The nomination itself for +IO+ is a huge success. The Oscars are global, very prestigious awards. We should be very happy about it, “- she said.

Recalling her work on the set of Skolimowski’s film, Drzymalska pointed out that for her – an animal lover – it was one of the most beautiful experiences of her life. “Working with an animal is very specific, because it really dictates the conditions. It is a specific partner, but it also reflects the emotions beautifully. Nothing can be dictated to it. It is also beautiful that there is a great freedom in him” – she remarked. When asked about funny situations on set in the context of working with donkeys, she mentioned a situation where Holla’s donkey bit her in the chest.

The world premiere of “IO” took place in May last year. during the Cannes Film Festival. The painting, which won the jury prize at the time, vaguely refers to “Bless you, Balthazar!” Robert Bresson. Its main character is a donkey who performs in a circus with a young performer named Kasandra (played by Sandra Drzymalska). The girl takes good care of him and IO gives him unconditional love. Unfortunately, when ushers enter the circus after a protest against animal use, the two have to go their separate ways. The donkey goes to the stable, then changes owners several times. He is supervised by a truck driver (Mateusz Kościukiewicz) and an Italian priest (Lorenzo Zurzolo) who takes the animal to the domain of the countess (Isabelle Huppert).

The co-writer and co-producer of “IO” is Ewa Piaskowska. Michał Dymek is responsible for cinematography (some of them were directed by Michał Englert and Paweł Edelman), and Agnieszka Glińska is responsible for editing.

Besides IO, Oscar chances for Best International Feature Film went to: Close by Lucas Dhont (Belgium), All the Same in the West by Edward Berger (Germany), Quiet Girl by Colm Bairead (Ireland) and Argentina, 1985 Santiago Mitrego (Argentina).

The winners of the 95th Academy Awards from the American Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences will be announced on Sunday, March 12 at the gala, which will take place at the Dolby Theater in Hollywood.
