Die Welt’s chief commentator, Jacques Schuster, wrote that the attitude of the Poles during the Second World War “left much to be desired”. According to him, the Polish diplomatic note on reparations aims to divert attention from the problems on the Vistula.
In his text, the commentator suggested that the Poles did not help the Jews, and during the German suppression of the Warsaw ghetto uprising in 1943, they were mainly busy “watching”. The author said the Polish government was only playing the “anti-German card” to distract from “failures” in the country.
Antoni Macierewicz: The Germans are absolutely lied and demoralized
On Polish Radio 24, Antoni Macierewicz reacted indignantly to the article. As he said, he finds it hard to believe that such words were written and it is something “shocking”. – This shows how absolutely the Germans have been lied to over the past few decades. Something incredible, something incredible – said the politician.
He noted that the descendant of those who are – alone – responsible for the genocide against the Jews, Poles and other nations during the Second World War, today dares to write something like this to those who survived the hell of World War II, suffered genocide at the hands of his nation, also for helping Jews, although in occupied Poland this was punishable by death.
– The Poles co-organized this uprising in the ghetto! How can you write such a thing? This is truly shocking and shows the extent of the demoralization and falsification of national consciousness and national memory in Germany, he stressed.
Article in “Die Welt” on reparations. Macierewicz: the propaganda is launched
Antoni Macierewicz considered that this text should meet with radical opposition not only from the Polish side, but also from the German media. Fortunately, Jacques Schuster aroused a great deal of indignation. Even German commentators have noted that his arguments are framed by “a set of false stereotypes” about Polish history and that “descendants of Holocaust perpetrators” are eager to share their guilt with other nations.
The former head of the Ministry of National Defense also referred to Jacques Schuster’s arguments on the war reparations that Poland is asking from Germany. According to him, the issue of reparations is part of the policy of the PiS government, which “needs the image of a repulsive German who considers Slavs as slaves to maintain his weak ‘self’.
Antoni Macierewicz said that this article is an element propaganda launched after Germany rejected Polish demand for reparations. – A propaganda was launched, supposed – it seems – to make us responsible for the Second World War. It follows that we murdered everyone, we did not help anyone, we have to pay reparations – the politician ironically commented.
