State releases funds to improve school safety

Many Mahoning Valley schools will benefit from state-backed safety improvements announced by Governor Mike DeWine.

He said this week that the state would support the installation of security upgrades at more than 700 elementary and secondary schools in Ohio to increase the safety of students and staff.

Across 57 counties, 708 schools will receive a share of the $57.8 million awarded through the DeWine School Safety K-12 Scholarship Program. The funds help schools cover physical security expenses such as new security cameras, audio systems, automatic door locks, visitor identification systems and outdoor lighting.

“We are proactive in keeping our schools in Ohio safe. The safety of students and staff is of paramount importance.” said DeWine. “These safety grants help schools create a safe and welcoming environment for teachers and their students.”

The announcement is part of the third wave of grants awarded under the Ohio K-12 School Safety Scholarship Program.

In the first round, $5 million in government funding was allocated to 95 schools in 27 counties. The second round of funding saw an increase following a partnership between the Ohio General Assembly and DeWine, bringing a total of $42.2 million to 1,065 schools.
