The United Nations Climate Change Conference COP27 will be held from November 6 to 18 in Egypt. Swedish climate activist Greta Thunberg said she would not attend, criticizing the world summit as a space for “greenwashing”.

– I am not going to COP27 for many reasons, but the space for civil society this year is extremely limited – said the activist at the premiere of her latest book in London.

According to Thunberg, famous for his school strikes in defense of the climate, “COP summits are primarily an opportunity for leaders and those in power to attract attention with many types of green lies.” She added that COP conferences “are not really about changing the whole system” but rather encouraging incremental progress on the climate issue. “That way they don’t really work unless we use it as an opportunity to mobilize,” she said.

Previously, Thunberg had signed a human rights coalition petition calling on Egyptian authorities to open civic space and release political prisoners.

Last week Thunberg’s “The Climate Book” was published, in which there were 100 expert articles, incl. economist Thomas Piketty, WHO chief Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus and writer Naomi Klein. Sales fees will go to the Thunberg Foundation, which will donate them to environmental charities. The activist said she wanted the book to have educational value, “which is a bit ironic because it’s notorious for school strikes”. She spoke about her protests outside the Swedish parliament in 2018.

Also last year, Greta Thunberg accused world leaders of inaction in tackling climate change. The activist mocked politicians at the climate summit Youth4Climate in Milan.

– The green economy, blah blah blah. Carbon neutrality by 2050, blah blah blah. Climate neutrality, blah blah blah. These are all we hear from our so-called leaders, words that sound good but have so far led to no action, she said.
