“Svenska Dagbladet” reports that, contrary to previous announcements from Budapest, Viktor Orban’s government will not accept Sweden and Finland’s membership in NATO this year. The daily quotes Marton Tompos, an MP from the Hungarian opposition party Momentum Movement, as saying that “Hungary has no intention of reconsidering Finland’s and Sweden’s applications for NATO membership this year”. .
Orban says no?
What is the reason for the slowness of the Hungarian government? According to Tompos, this is due to the character of Orban, who “hates being told what to do”.
– At the moment you are just a playing card in his hands – said a representative of the Hungarian opposition and added that he had tried several times to start a discussion on the issue of enlargement of NATO in the Foreign Affairs Committee, but without much success .
Swedish journalists have asked other Hungarian politicians from opposition parties for comment. Their opinions coincided with those expressed by Tompos.
“Orban is now provoking the West. It’s psychology. He wants to see how far he can go, said former Foreign Secretary Peter Balazs.
Budapest has so far said it will consider membership applications from Sweden and Finland by mid-December.
What will Hungary do?
Recently, the head of the German Foreign Ministry warned Hungary against the delay in accepting NATO enlargement. From the mouth of Annalena Baerbock harsh words have been spoken.
Hungary is the last country, apart from Turkey, which has not yet ratified the accession of new states to the North Atlantic Alliance.
Finland and Sweden, which have remained militarily neutral for decades, have sought NATO membership since May amid fears that Russia could invade, as it did in Ukraine on February 24, triggering the greatest armed conflict in Europe since the end of the Second World War.
