Teacher. Jabłoński comments on Social Changes reparations survey

According to the survey of social changes for the wPolityce.pl portal, up to 57%. The Poles believe that Germany should pay reparations to Poland for World War II. Only 19 percent disagree (the remaining 24 percent have no opinion on this). The results of the survey for the wPolityce.pl portal are commented by prof. Arkadiusz Jabłoński, sociologist from the Catholic University of Lublin.

Most Poles are even convinced, or at least not against, the claim of Poland against Germany resulting from the losses suffered during the Second World War

said Prof. Jablonski. He points out that fewer and fewer Poles believe that the so-called European solidarity is beneficial for Poland.

In the context of the current geopolitical situation, it can be seen that Germany is mainly implementing its own policy, so probably fewer and fewer people believe in European solidarity and hope that such an economically strong country will be interested in certain activities for Poland

he points out.

Will the opposition support the government’s efforts to obtain compensation from Germany, also given the results of opinion polls indicating Polish support for these actions?

I think they will try to water it down a bit. It will be such actions that we cannot alienate Europe’s strongest ally, that a dialogue must be held and that compensation is possible, but this issue must not be presented in such a ruthless way. In addition, they will give, as they have done before, arguments that the Germans have already compensated us in some way for these war losses. This has already come up – a matter of giving us the Western Territories. There were also arguments that we should instead direct our claims to Russia, which took away some of our lands to the east. It can be such a policy that we are “for” to finally be against this solution

he analyses.

Can the question of reparations be important in the electoral campaign?

A sociologist answers the question whether the issue of reparations can have any importance in the next election campaign.

This will be important as long as it is integrated into a coherent policy that the united right sends a signal that we fight for our interests, that both in the EU and in bilateral policy with various countries, we put our national interest first. So far this rhetoric has worked for the PiS, the Poles have become convinced of this, seeing that this game of practicing a kind of European solidarity often ends in such a way that we are exploited or do not receive as much as we could, even in such matters as recently KPO. A clear message that we continue to defend the Polish national interest and translate it into specific initiatives will certainly promote support for the united right
