This is another event in our region related to the “Year of Wanda Rutkiewicz” celebrated this year. The exhibition “A pole on the roofs of the world” was organized at the Museum of Sport and Tourism in Karpacz.

The opening of the exhibition took place on the last Sunday, October 16 and this date was not chosen at random. On this day in 1978, Wanda Rutkiewicz, as the third woman in the world and the first Polish woman, stood on top of the highest mountain on Earth – Mount Everest. To commemorate this event, a commemorative plaque was also placed at the Ministry of Sports and Tourism, unveiled by the Mayor of Karpacz, Radosław Jęcek, two-time Olympic shooting champion and Deputy Chairman of the Museum Council of the Ministry of Sports and Tourism, Renata Mauer-Różańska, and Józef Piotrowski, president of Gambit of Lubawka, sponsor of the plaque.

At the exhibition in our museum you can see many personal souvenirs of Wanda Rutkiewicz – says Zbigniew Kulik, director of the Ministry of Sports and Tourism in Karpacz. – Among others, the order “Star of Excellence” with a diploma awarded to him by the Pakistani government for his outstanding achievements in mountaineering, Polish state decorations, insignia of expeditions to Gasherbrunn III, Elbrus. Other memorabilia include the 1991 CHO OYU 8201 Senior Expedition pennant, original ice ax and hammer, headlamp, stove and mountaineering goggles belonging to Wanda Rutkiewicz.
