Analysis by the Institute of Family Studies shows that most women around the world, not just in Europe and North America, do not achieve the desired level of fertility, that is to say, they give birth to fewer children than they would like. The author of the study claims that the demand for children exceeds the supply.

Estimates show that the fertility gap for women entering childbearing age in 2010 is 270 million, which equates to 6 to 10 million per year. Poland, along with Latvia, Estonia, Greece, Japan, South Korea and some African countries, tops the list of countries with the largest fertility gap, notes the Polish Economic Institute.

PIE also cites a CBOS study in Poland, which shows that only 30 percent of respondents under the age of 40 have their reproductive needs met, 57 percent have fewer children than they would like, and only 1 percent has more than expected.
