Saakashvili dies in prison

The former president of Georgia was arrested and imprisoned in October 2021, upon his arrival in Batumi. Previously, from 2013, Mikheil Saakashvili remained outside Georgia. He lived for several years in Ukraine. At that time, local authorities were prosecuting the former president, and his supporters assured that any charges against him were politically motivated. At the end of November 2022, Shalva Khachapuridze, Mikheil Saakashvili’s lawyer, reports that traces of arsenic were found in the body of the politician. A group of 10 experts, after several days of consultations, concluded that it was very likely that the Georgian politician had been poisoned.

In mid-December, Saakashvili wrote a dramatic letter published in Le Mondein which he asked for help from French President Emmanuel Macron. “All my life, I fought for freedom and reforms in Georgia and Ukraine, (I also fought – editor’s note) against Russian imperialist policy. Putin considers me one of his main enemies,” the letter read. “I am dying, I have little time left,” Sakashvili wrote.
