Nobody likes when the game takes a long time to start and at first, colloquially speaking, it’s boring. We definitely prefer productions that crash into the chair from the start. Today’s ranking will be an attempt to appreciate these titles. We’ll try to pick the ten best prologues in a moment. Maybe not in the entire history of electronic entertainment, but certainly in the last three generations of consoles.
There are several ways to define a good prologue. Sometimes it’s an effective and well-scripted sequence, other times it’s a heartbreaking scene. The list below will therefore be quite varied, but AAA games definitely dominate it. Be sure to share your thoughts in the comments. Do you agree with the first three?
Anticipating questions – in creating this list, I did my best to avoid spoilers. You can safely read
10. Assassin’s Creed II
We start with Ubisoft’s great success of two console generations before. His debut was remarkable for several reasons. The creators used several means to make us love Ezio immediately. First we see how the boy was born, then we move on a dozen years to the beginning of the story. We see a future assassin taking part in fights, picking up a girl or jumping around buildings. The first sight of the panorama of the city with the fantastic music of Jesper Kyd in the background is very impressive. Finally, key storyline events related to Ezio’s father and brothers await us. So why only tenth place? Unfortunately, the beginning is interspersed with modern footage which spoils the effect a bit.
9. Battlefield 4
Battlefield has never had as many well-staged and scripted missions as Call of Duty. However, there were a few pearls. One of them is the opening of Battlefield 4 and the mission in Baku. It all starts with an earthquake, that is, a scene in a sunken car. In the very first minutes, we have to sacrifice our companions to save ourselves. Before shooting, we go back several minutes and we see the progress of the whole mission. This one is designed in a Call of Duty style. It’s fast, intense, there are also some well-directed adrenaline-packed extra scenes or sequences (in this case, driving a car). The mission is suspenseful from start to finish and heralds a great single-player campaign.
8. Mass Effect 3
The grand finale of a huge space opera must start with a strong accent. Mass Effect 3 begins on Earth, where Shepard attends a meeting with politicians. However, everything is interrupted by the attack of the Reapers. We are thrown into the fray from the start. The most important thing in this sequence, however, is to show that this war is the final conflict. The scale of the attacks is gigantic, so Shepard and the crew can only evacuate. We not only observe a large number of enemy units (on Earth and in space), but also a little boy who takes part in it all. Fans of the indoctrination theory surely know what this kid was meant to symbolize. So the prologue was impressive, but it’s not even the best in the history of the Mass Effect franchise. However, let’s not anticipate the facts.
