TikTok Suspends Operations in Russia Due to Repressive Law Against “Fake News”

“During the suspension of operations in Russia, we will evaluate the legal consequences of the new law, because security is our top priority,” it was argued. “The communications service will not be affected by the new decision,” the statement added.

“TikTok is a place for creativity and entertainment that can provide comfort and nurture relationships in times of war resulting in human tragedies and isolation. However, the safety of our employees and users must remain our primary determinant,” indicates the press release.

Russian President Vladimir Putin on Friday signed a law providing for penalties of up to 15 years in prison for anyone publishing “false information” about the Russian armed forces. The new law also provides for sanctions for “calling for sanctions against Russia” in relation to the Russian military attack on Ukraine.
