Café Avissinia

Kinetou 7

Athens, Greece

Strolling through the lively Athenian district of Monastiraki, between soap stalls, handmade sandals or T-shirts in the colors of Greece, we found the way to Café Avissinia. The place exists since 1985, initially it was a cafe. Grandmother’s style reigns here: floral wallpaper and upholstery, paintings on the walls, antique furniture, lots of trinkets. After climbing a few floors, we found ourselves seated at a table with a breathtaking view of the Acropolis. The location itself satisfied us, and that was just the beginning of our enjoyment. We ordered Greek specialties. First a mussaka, with a perfectly seasoned meat sauce, firm vegetables, which despite cooking retained their structure – by far the best we’ve tasted so far. More tzatziki – fresh and incredibly refreshing thanks to the addition of lemon juice, with a non-repellent amount of garlic, which was often the case in places we visited before. Next, a Greek salad in which the vegetables tasted like they were picked from the garden, melt-in-your-mouth veal with tomatoes with carrots and olives, and finally – fried calamari. What more could you ask for? A warm evening, the Acropolis illuminated in the distance, delicious food and cold Greek wine on the table … Note this address if you are planning a trip to Athens, and if you are not planning – we invite you to change your notice .
