Turin 2018. Polish volleyball players are world champions again!

Despite previous big victories, few expected Poland to win against Brazil without dropping a set in the Volleyball World Championship grand final. Just.

First it was 28:26, then 25:20 and finally 25:23. The Poles defended their championship title in exciting fashion in Bulgaria and Italy. Additionally, individual awards at their position were won by: Paweł Zatorski, Piotr Nowakowski and Michał Kubiak, and Bartosz Kurek was named tournament MVP.

The Canarinhos have no chance

The emotion was strong, but if we looked at the situation with composure, it must be said that the victory was indisputable. The last and twelfth match of the tournament took place under the (almost) total control of our representatives. The Brazilians only led at the very beginning of the first set. As the score was 5:5, there were still more points on the Polish side.

Of course, on the other side of the net were athletes who did not return from the World Cup without at least one silver medal for many years. We had to be extremely vigilant not to be fooled by the South American champions. But what was striking was the great concentration of the whole team. They really behaved like great champions from the first to the last minute. They came to show that they are the strongest in the world.

This doesn’t happen in Polish sport: reaching the top in a team sport popular on all continents. And for the second time in a row. We can only dream of a football title. We have never had champion teams in handball (even if it was close) or especially in basketball. The volleyball players did it for the third time. First the legendary team of Hubert Wagner in 1974,
