What is the difference between breeders in Europe? We checked in at the EuroTier show

From November 15 to 18, EuroTier was held in Hannover, Germany, organized by the DLG-Deutsche Landwirtschaft Gesellschaft, i.e. the German Agricultural Society. This breeding event showed how different breeders in Europe are doing.

The most important exhibition in the world for professionals in animal husbandry and livestock management opens its doors every two years, alternating with Agritechnika. This year they were fewer than in previous years, fewer companies exhibited, fewer farmers visited them – so said those who came to Hanover this year. Attendance was saved by specialized energy fairs, which accompanied EuroTier this year. “EnergyDecentral” has taken the position of the most important platform for decentralized energy systems. In the current debate over scarce resources, economics and politics must urgently put distributed power generation on the agenda. This is why biogas, solid fuels, photovoltaics, wind power, cogeneration technologies and “Power to gas” solutions, concrete solutions being an example of the implementation of energy transformation based on distributed energy , have been particularly studied.

Hubertus Paetow, President of DLG, makes it clear: producers need to know what the future holds in order to be able to continue producing.

This year, the EuroTier brought together 1,600 exhibitors from 55 countries, whose stands were arranged according to the dominant themes. Thus, the main exhibitors were those who were focused on the theme “Transforming Livestock”. It is undeniable that more and more management models based on a global approach to this, to the collection and processing of data are entering livestock farming. Breeders are not able to collect them themselves, and then develop them and draw conclusions. They often leave the above matters “in the hands” of sophisticated computer systems. The computer becomes an indispensable partner in production.

The second key theme was wellness. In addition, the Federal Ministry of Food and Agriculture (BMEL) in Germany is creating a joint national project with breeders called “Animal Welfare Network”. This project was visible at the fair. Its objective is to answer the current questions related to the improvement of the well-being in breeding. In the field of cattle breeding, welfare experts suggest, among other things: on raising calves with their mothers, feeding and paddocks. Alternately, alternative farrowing systems, housing construction concepts for sow rearing and piglet rearing have provided information for pig farmers.

The third thematic way of placing companies at the EuroTier fair was direct selling. The agricultural policy of the European Union is based on products from its own region with a traceable origin, which was also evident in Hanover. For many people, it is important to buy agricultural products directly from farmers. Therefore, clean processing and direct selling are becoming attractive to more and more agricultural businesses. At EuroTier 2022, relevant technical solutions, products and services as well as current marketing strategies were presented for the first time on best practice examples.

It is undeniable that the spirit of the present time made itself felt very strongly during the biggest cattle fair in Europe. The key themes of the show above leave no illusions about the future of livestock farming in Europe. There are different industries at two different poles. Good milk and beef prices now allow dairy and beef cattle farmers to look to the future with optimism. Concerns about profitability accompany pig farmers. The two breeders are forced to invest mainly in technologies and tools that are part of the EuroTier thematic fair. Hubertus Paetow, president of the German Agricultural Society (DLG), stresses that politicians need to be more predictable when referring to the objectives of the common agricultural policy. “We don’t know what else they’re going to come up with, and that’s very bad. We agree on environmental and climate protection, but we only have 50%. no longer protects our crops. We want to know what they have planned for us in the future?
