World rowing champions and coach Aleksander Wojciechowski honored and rewarded

The ceremony took place during the training conference of the Polish Association of Rowing Societies, which takes place in Poznań. The short oars team’s head coach, Wojciechowski, was unable to attend the event due to illness. In September, the doubles team won the world championship in Racice, Czech Republic, and a month earlier won the silver medal at the European Championships. She also won the World Cup in Lucerne.

– The season has been very good for us, we are satisfied with the results obtained, we hope to be able to repeat it in the years to come. We must remember that the composition of our colony has changed, not only compared to previous years, but also this season. In this ranking, we only played the third World Cup and we showed our best team by winning the final with a three-second advantage over our rivals – a member of the Czaja championship crew told PAP.

Players received financial bonuses from the sponsor for medals at the most important events – 48,000 PLN each. They will also receive separate awards from the Ministry of Sports for their sporting achievements. Bonuses were also awarded to Wojciechowski and Sycz.

The current four are starting to be compared to the “dominators” who won Olympic gold in Beijing. This village was also ruled by Wojciechowski.

– Difficult to compare these colonies, the rulers had their time, which lasted quite a long time. We just won our first championship. My dream is to repeat their success – added Czaja.

Summarizing the past year, PZTW President Adam Korol admitted that it tasted bittersweet to him.

– It has been a difficult year with many changes resulting from the fact that we have started a new Olympic cycle. Only one crew, the light doubles, sailed with the same crew as last year, and there were sometimes very big changes in the other crews. The composition of the Tokyo Olympic vice-champions has changed by half, the coxless four also in an almost completely different combination. I think that several colonies sailed below the expectations of our authorities, but especially ours, he assessed.

As he added, he is happy with the attitude of the double four, a competition very close to Korol. The current helmsman of the union was one of the “dominators”.

– This gold medal of the World Championships made me very happy. Especially since in Polish sport in the Olympic disciplines in 2022 we won only four gold medals, one of which was thanks to our rowers – he underlined.

Due to the poorer results, the union’s board of directors decided to make major changes to the training department. Wojciechowski’s team was joined by rowers Katarzyna Zillmann and Marta Wieliczko as well as lightweight competitors. Other groups also have new coaches.

– We instructed coach Wojciechowski to work, but of course with his consent. We expanded this training staff and Przemysław Konecki, who had previously worked in youth groups, joined us. I think that working in such a large group, and in addition a man-woman group, will bring measurable benefits – summed up the head of the union.

On Saturday, at the end of the course conference, the best trainer of PZTW 2022 will be announced, and the selection will be made by a special chapter. Wojciechowski is the big favorite.
