A petition has been created to warn humanity against the uncontrolled development of artificial intelligence – Computerworld

More than 1,000 people from the IT world signed an open letter this week calling for a halt to work on developing artificial intelligence technology over the coming months. The authors believe that at this time, clear rules should be developed to prevent this technology from slipping out of humanity’s control.

Interest in artificial intelligence has reached unprecedented levels, with new AI applications being made public almost daily. The petition refers to the lack of planning when it comes to implementing advanced artificial intelligence models and what it calls a runaway race. That is why, before our eyes, new AI systems are created almost every day, which the creators themselves do not fully understand and it is difficult for them to predict what it will all lead to.

The letter was signed by many bigwigs in the IT world, including Elon Musk and Steve Wozniak, co-founder of Apple. It is interesting and significant that the petition does not bear the signature of Sam Altman, the CEO of OpenAI. In a letter published by the non-profit Future of Life Institute, the signatories of the petition call on AI laboratories to stop developing new versions of this technology even more powerful than that developed by OpenAI. They also believe that the governments of each country should adopt a moratorium on the development of AI until an appropriate law governing this issue is adopted.

The petition lists the potential threats that AI poses to humanity and society, including the possibility of spreading misinformation and widespread automation of workplaces. The letter called on artificial intelligence companies to create and implement special security protocols that would control artificial intelligence and be constantly monitored by independent experts.

The petition’s suggested pause in AI development would give AI labs and independent experts time to develop security protocols for advanced AI design that would make AI systems more accurate, more safer, more predictable and more reliable.

The dangerous thing is that the launch of the OpenAI chatbot has prompted a number of companies to introduce their own solutions of this type. Therefore, the development of AI technology is chaotic and no one knows where it will lead us.
